
Most of us enjoy fireworks and the beauty of the bright lights in the night sky but did you know that it is illegal in the Republic of Ireland to use or have fireworks with out the proper licence.
Serious penalties can be imposed on those who are found to have or have used unlicensed fireworks.
As the law stands it is illegal, without an appropriate license to:
- Ignite a firework
- Throw, direct or propel an ignited firework at a person or property
- Possess fireworks with intent to sell or supply, without an appropriate license.
and the Gardai have the power to, request names, search without a warrant a persons, vehicles, vessels or aircraft. The Gardai can also seize fireworks and detain and arrest without warrant those involved in the illegal possession of fireworks.
Under the amended legislation (Criminal Justice Act 2006) the penalties: on summary conviction are – fine Euro 2,500 or 6 months imprisonment or both, on indictment – Euro 10,000 or 5 years or both.
